Why is NAD+ so important?
NAD+ enables cells to generate cellular energy from the food that we eat. It is also an important substrate for a variety of NAD+-consuming enzymes (including PARPs and sirtuins). Even though scientists have known about this molecule for more than 100 years, there are more studies being published on NAD+ than ever before. This resurgence of scientific interest is partly sparked by research showing NAD+ can decrease over time and under metabolic stress. Some scientists even think that declining NAD+ levels may play a major role in the aging process.
In 1906, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) was discovered as an important coenzyme in human body, and the relationship between NAD+ level and aging has been continuously clarified in the past century [1,2]. In 2007, NAD+ direct precursor nicotinamide RIbose (NR) was officially launched as the "elixir of life" . In 2013, another direct precursor of NAD+, nicotinamide mono-nucleotide (NMN), was also discovered by the "star producer" geneticist David A. Sinclair
